The South West Sports Assembly will be developing an online database to promote all South West Clubs with a function that will allow access to nominated club members to update their details online. Watch this space!!!

1. 2008 South West Games

The 2008 South West Games will be held in the municipality of Warrnambool from the 1st to 9th of November.

Visit the Games website to see if your sport is participating www.southwestgames.com.au and if not register an expression of interest to conduct an event.

Key Dates for the games are as follows:

  • 30th September 7pm @ Archie Graham Centre Warrnambool - Games Directors' Meeting
  • 21st October 7pm @ Archie Graham Centre Warrnambool - Games Directors' Meeting
  • 30th October Games Launch Time & Location TBA
  • 1st - 9th November Games Period
  • 2nd December 7pm @ Archie Graham Centre Warrnambool - Games Directors' Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Night

    2. South West Sports Assembly Access for All Abilities

    The Access for all abilities programs can provide assistance for your club with inclusive programming and education and training when including participants with disabilities in your activities.

    3. South West Sports Assembly Participation in Community Sport and Active Recreation

    Looking to attract new members. The PICSAR program can provide assistance for your club with inclusive programming and education and training when targetting indigenous, new arrival and disadvantaged communities.

    4. South West Sports Assembly Supporting Counry Sport Program

    Looking to develop your club. The SCS program can provide information about funding, resources and club development activities to help your club grow and develop.

    5. Certificate IV in Business (Governance)

    Practical accredited governance training for the members and supporters to the boards, management committees and councils of Australian community groups and schools.

    The Certificate IV in Business (Governance) provides a widely respected, nationally recognised governance qualification for those working on or with the governing structures of Australian community organisations. The program has been developed by Our Community in partnership with BSI Learning.

    The course will be run at the Willian Angliss Conference Centre from November 10th-13th 2008. For further information email Lisa Reed at lisar@ourcommunity.com.au or phone 03 9320 6820


    Grants & Funding

    1. Country Action Grants Scheme (CAGS) & Victalent

    The Country Action Grant Scheme aims to increase the capacity of community sport and recreation organisations in rural Victoria. Grants of up to $5,000 are available for three project types: Improving Organisations, Enhancing Skills and Including Everyone.

    The VicTalent Grant Scheme Provides financial assistance to grassroots sport and recreation organisations in regional and rural Victoria to support developing athletes, coaches, officials and teams who travel extensively to train and compete.

    Please note that this year the CAGS and Victalent have been changed so the applications are open all year round!!

    Victalent Open dates:

  • 12 Apr 2008 to 17 Oct 2008 for travel between 1 Jan 2009 to 30 Jun 2009
  • 18 Oct 2008 to 16 Apr 2009 for travel between 1 Jul 2009 and 31 Dec 2009

    Country Action Open dates:

  • 12 Apr 2008 to 17 Oct 2008 for projects commencing between 1 Jan 2009 to 30 Jun 2009
  • 18 Oct 2008 to 16 Apr 2009 for projects commencing between 1 Jul 2009 and 31 Dec 2009

    Remember that the Country Action Grant Scheme and Victalent are separate, with separate guidelines and application forms.

    Eligible clubs and organisations may apply for one grant of up to $5,000 under one of the CAGS, they may also apply for up to two $500 Victalent travel assistance grants.

    2. Victorian Volunteer Small Grants

    Victorian Volunteer Small Grants of up to $5000 are available for Victorian organisations to:

  • attract new volunteers from diverse backgrounds, e.g. Indigenous people, newly arrived migrants, people with disabilities;
  • create new volunteering opportunities; and
  • strengthen existing volunteering programs as a way of engaging new volunteers.

    3. 2009/2010 Community Facility Funding Program (CFFP)

    The 2009/2010 Community Facility Funding Program (CFFP) for council & community organisations are now open.

    The CFFP is designed to help local councils develop new or upgrade exsisting minor or major sport & recreation facilities across Victoria and improve access for the community. The 2009/2010 CFFP categories include:

  • Planning - Grants of up to $30,000 for recreation facility planning for feasable studies;
  • Minor Facilities - Grants of up to $60,000 to develop and upgrade community sport & recreation facilities;
  • Major Facilities - Gratns of up to $500,000 for the development of major community sport & recreation facilities;
  • Aquatic Access/Better Pools - Gratns of up to $2.5 million to provide quality aquatic leisure facilities; and
  • Seasonal Pool Renewal - Grants of up to $200,000 to rejuvenate seasonal swimming pools in rural and regional communities, and in the interface councils.

    Sport Education, Training & Club Development

    1. Certificate IV in Business (Governance)

    2. Online Courses

    Play by the Rules offers free, online training courses for coaches, administrators, umpires and referees as well as participants & volunteers.

    The courses are short (taking no more than 2 hours), may be done in part or all at once, and make extensive use of case studies.

    Two of the courses that are available are:

  • Discrimination & Harrasment
  • Child Protection

    1. 2008 South West Games

    The 2008 South West Games will be held in the municipality of Warrnambool from the 1st to 9th of November.

    We encourage all members of the community to participate.

    2. Active Girls Breakfast

    Twenty teenage girls from Warrnambool and Brauer College boxed and bowled their way to a healthy brunch at the Regal Café on Monday, August 25th, which was part of the 2008 Active Girls Breakfast Series developed by the Department for Planning and Community Development, Go For Your Life Program.

    The brunch provided the forum to discuss and find out first hand from the girls the barriers and enablers to participating in sport and recreation, with role models Louise Richards – personal trainer and Val Bertrand - sportswomen providing first hand experience into the benefits of a healthy & active lifestyle and positive body image.

    The Active Girls Breakfast series perfectly aligns with the South West Sports Assembly’s PICSAR program aimed at increasing participation in community sport and recreation.




    Industry News

    1. Sport Club Facility Hire and Lease Agreements

    VicSport has released a resource that defines hire and lease agreements in relation to grounds and facilities.

    2. Working with Children Checks

    Working with children (WWC) checks will be phased into the sport sector commencing 1 July 2008. The WWC check is manged by the Department of Justice and will phase in over two years for the sport sector.

    Under the phasing in plan, people who work or volunteer in connection with the following sports and who need a WWC check are required to apply between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2009:

  • Athletics (including Little Athletes)
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Football (soccer)
  • Gymnastics (including trampolining)
  • Swimming (including Life Saving)
  • Netball
  • Tennis
  • Martial Arts

    3. Discrimination in Sport - Exemptions & Exceptions - Sport

    It is lawful to discriminate in competitive sporting activities for the following reasons:

  • competitive standards - whether someone can compete effectively;
  • age - participation in competitive sport may be limited to a specific age or age group;
  • disability - participation in competitive sport may be limited to people with a general or specific disability;
  • sex - organisers of sporting activities for people over 12 years of age may discriminate on the basis of sex if strength, stamina or physique is relevant.

    2. Australian Sports Foundation

    The Austrlaian Sports Foundation (ASF) is an independent company initiated by the Austrlaian Government and incorporated in 1986 with the charter to support the development of sport in Australia. The ASF is listed in the Tax Assesment Act (1997) as a deductible gift recipient, which means that donations to the ASF in support of sporting projects conducted by eligible organisations are tax deductible. The aim of the ASF is to enable sporting organisations to source additional funds in the form of donations for specific purposes, using the incentive of tax deductibility.

    Help is offered through the Sport Incentive Program. This includes a range of project types covering most aspects of sport development, and which are designed to assist organisations to value-add to their sporting infrastructure.

    The way the Sport Incentive Program works is explained on the ASF website www.asf.org.au, where there are fact sheets, case studies, and guidelines available for potential clients.

    3. Ngarrakeetoon Bicycle Education & Maintenance Workshop
